How to make a chair

When I made this chair when I designed this chair, I wanted a chair that would fracture and break and destroy any intimidation anyone had about chair making so

I designed it specifically to answer all the criteria of what a good chair is and i hope that working on this will give you the confidence to start making chairs and here.

I have given you a design that really works it’s a great design it’s perfect it’s a very safe chair a very solid chair and I’m going to work on some of the features.

How to make a chair

Here just to introduce it because there are things you need to know about How to make a chair that most even very competent chairman furniture makers avoid making chairs because.

They are time consuming because they are not sure of their sales because they have idiosyncrasies to tell them other furniture won’t have this chair.

It’s solid it’s designed to last let’s say 150 200 years I’d be perfectly happy it answers all questions ecology problems is a life time chair so let’s take a quick look at the features of this chair this is a prototype oh i always make a prototype when

New piece

I’m designing a new piece this one just popped out of my head all the sizes popped out of my head the angles me it went out of my head after doing that.

The seat wasn’t too deep that the width wasn’t too wide that the angle of the back wasn’t too relaxed stuff like that

Made sure it wasn’t a chair that flips over easily that it’s the kind of thing that i built on this chair and then you can see parallel rails things like that

Want to talk about some of that stuff with you but this is the prototype these are my drawings in my notebook so

I have everything recorded every change I made to the design it’s recorded here every alteration i made to make it fit right look right feel right everything else so that’s my notebook

But here’s the core of where I’m going to be this is premium quartersawn oak I have chosen the best of the best I have maximized each piece to match each other.

Same tree

I have the burgundy from the same tree the same board the same section of the tree so i took this in one board and I made two at a time with it I made a bar with it

Got all my post rails two at a time and so on from the same piece of wood so it all looks matched and perfect when I make this chair because.

You it to see the details that go into it so put that aside let me just quickly show you the chair a little closer and then you’ll understand what you’re looking for when you start building your chair choose your wood look for all of the different aspects that I’m going to try to point out, either now or as we go along, and let’s take a look at these features that I just talked about.

 You may want them lower

They may get in the way; you may have them wider. Thighs than I have or something. You can always lower this half an inch, which would be fine. I have no problem with that. Look at the arch here; this means the chair is lighter when you lift it.

Being very typical of shakers or something, you have narrow rails, which lightens the look. I have an arch here, but I have the width of a nice wide spike which gives me the strength of a nice wide, wide tournament.

Then you can see a rail parallel to this. It effectively expands the width from just one for each rail to something like a 9-inch rail, so I have this incredible strength here on the side. I have the same thing here. Can you see how this rail tilts?

When I made the chair, I had it raised like this, so it was level on top, but I cut the bat legs off a bit, so it latched back.

This is very important when you make a chair

It would be best if you had this angle here. You don’t want it to be more than 7 degrees in t the back of a chair from the seat here, so it’ll figure that out and then make sure what you have is seven degrees which.

I’ve looked at here with this, and I’ve got seven degrees here so no I don’t want eight degrees nor do I want it four degrees

Don’t want it square because when you sit you feel like your knees are under your chin that’s the bad design you don’t want that in a modern chair the back leg here how does this come here when I first did this is parallel

But then I took a half inch off the bottom of this back leg which kicked it back can you see how this leg flares out here when a kid kneels on a chair here it rests on this back rail the tendency is for the chair to tip over this way your fingers are here, and that’s why your fingers hurt when you lean back, I’m not saying these answers the question of parental control and responsibility. ad from parents say or that this reduces the risk of falling.

 Going back

I put this little kicker on the back of the leg and put a curve here. We’ll show you how to design this now. This is the first step.

I’ll show you how to create in the first part of this, and then we’ll get into the fabrication has 26 mortise and tenon joints, and they vary, and you can see this rail down here. This rail is quite complex on this back because it has a compound shoulder line where none are square. There is nothing square on this back shoulder.

Show you how to tackle the rest. It is quite simple. Can you see how the chair is narrower in the back than in the front? The gist of a good chair is if it’s square, it will look like it would if it was made for your local school or local council office, your local doctor’s surgery, something like that.

A good chair always tapers from wide at the front to narrow at the back. These are the features that make a good arched chair backless there are no spinal problems like that slight curve in the backstops and the shoulders.
